Spanish/English Dual Language Program
The JPS Dual Language program is a unique opportunity available at Jenks East Elementary that is designed to promote bilingualism and biliteracy in both English and Spanish. The aim of the program is to provide an academically and culturally enriched environment that will develop bilingual and biliterate students with a goal of students reading, writing, and conversing on or above grade level in both English and Spanish by the end of fourth grade. This is achieved by combining the linguistic strengths of students whose home language is either English or Spanish. Classes consist of approximately 50% native English speaking students and 50% native Spanish speaking students.
Learning opportunities are provided to meet the cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and cultural needs of the students, and will foster respect and appreciation for the diversity within the school and community. The curriculum is integrated and thematic in order to promote vocabulary development. Instructional time is evenly divided between English and Spanish with equally challenging curriculum provided in both languages. Students receive their initial reading instruction in Spanish and then transition to reading in both languages beginning in second grade. Various ongoing assessments in both languages are used to monitor student progress and plan appropriate instruction.
Parental involvement plays a vital role in the success of students within the Dual Language Program. Parents are encouraged to participate in activities throughout the year and play an active role in the development of their child’s language development skills.
