Essential Skills

Cornell Notes

  • Develop competence in using all components of a Cornell Notes page (Click here to see a sample page.)

  • Complete steps 1 and 2:  Listing proper heading and topic

  • Complete summarizing portion of the note page

Materials Management:  The Avid Binder

  • Organize materials for each subject in the binder: divider, assignment log, notes (more recent in front), learning logs (if applicable), handouts, returned tests/quizzes/assignments

  • Complete 5 pages of notes for each binder check

Time Management: The Agenda

  • Use an agenda, an assignment log or an AVID calendar on a daily basis to list assignments, class activities, long term projects, and quizzes/test

Learning Styles

  • Complete a learning styles inventory

  • Analyze results to understand personal learning style and how these strengths contribute to learning

Goal Setting

  • Distinguish among the three types of goals:  long-range, mid-range, and short-range

  • Write long-, mid- and short-range goals

Test-Taking/ Study Skills

  • Use student-generated study guides

  • Practice predicting test questions
