School Attendance Matters!

Don’t let 2 missed days define your year! Research shows that most students with just 2 absences in the first month of school go on to miss more than 25 days total. Start the year off strong by making sure students are in school whenever they are not sick. (Source).

Hit the ground running this year! Students missing 5 days of school in the first month fall behind in critical reading and math skills for the rest of the year. Prepare students for a successful year by making sure they are in school when they are not sick.(Source) (Source).

A day of missed school is a lost opportunity for social development. By coming to school every day they’re not sick, your child is gaining social skills that will land them their first job as an adult like time management, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Children’s mental health is important. Students who miss just 2 days of school a month tend to be more stressed and anxious. Help lower student stress by encouraging attendance when students are feeling well. (Source).

Distance Learning/Staff Collaboration

For the 2024-25 school year, six dates are set aside as Distance Learning Days for all JPS students and Collaboration Days for staff members. Students will stay home on these dates to participate in distance learning. Teachers will notify students of assignments via Canvas or other digital platforms.

JPS staff members will meet on these dates to collaborate, but students will not attend school in-person on the dates listed below:

Friday, September 27
Friday, November 1

Friday, December 13
Friday, January 31
Friday, February 28
Friday, April 18

Why does Jenks Public Schools spend time and resources on professional learning for teachers and staff? It's simple. Research shows high-quality professional development improves instructional practices AND student learning. It comes down to return on investment. A 2018 study found that one year of professional coaching accelerated teacher growth at a rate that typically occurs over three years of teaching experience. A 2019 study found that teacher mentoring has been shown to accelerate student growth. Students achieve more when learning from teachers who are well-prepared and well-supported. On JPS Collaboration Days, staff members become more equipped to address challenges. They feel energized and valued which leads to retention and overall job satisfaction.
