If you’ve ever been to a football game, you’ve seen them dressed up as cowboys or with painted handprints all over them as they made their way to the end of the stadium section. Maybe you’ve heard them from screaming chants or the music that they have playing during timeouts.
That is Jenks Superfans.
Jenks Superfans is a club of students who go to as many sports events that are at home to support the teams. They are part hosts of the pep rallies and come up with themes for students to wear at the football games.
Though the themes seem simple and are perfectly timed for what’s going, they are actually planned way before time.
“Some themes we kinda do that every year. Like against Bixby it’s country. Against Union it’s paint up, but as far as like everything else it’s all the officers. We had a meeting before the school year started and we just kinda figured out which ones we wanted to do and set those things according to the weather,” said Sam Hall, the vice president of Superfans.
Along with this the officers also have to set up the football games whether that’s by the music or passing around baby powder that’s going to get thrown up later in the game along with other responsibilities.
“For football season we have to set everything up as far as like the scaffolding and like we play the music. Do the chants and basically just try to get as much student involvement as we can at the football game. Make sure everybody is engaged and paying attention because that’s what they’re there for,” said Hall.
With all the games Hall went to, her favorite game by far was the pink out.
“Favorite game this year was the pink out. I had a juicy contour matching pajama set with a pink bob wig. I was just going all in with the theme and then we dyed the baby powder pink which was fun. So whenever we did the “I believe chant” it was just pink baby powder and we got a ton of confetti cannons and just handed them out to all the officers. It was just amazing,” said Hall.
Even with all the fun, I wanted to know what got her into it in the first place. Why did she want to join Superfans?
She got inspired by seeing Superfans at work right in front of her.
“Specifically last year, I just got really into the football games and I had a lot of senior friends so I sat at the front with them. Just like seeing the superfans have such a great time and just like get all of the student section get super excited about the football game. It was just something I wanted to be a part of,” said Hall.
Though the club fair comes around at the beginning of the year, you can always join Superfans simply by showing up to any athletic games at any time.
“If you want to be an officer you have to apply. It’s mainly seniors, but they’re some junior officers. Then if you just want to be a part of it, just show up. Cheer loud and come to as many events as you can just to support Jenks Athletics and stuff like that,” said Hall.
A thing that’s clear is that you don't have to love sports to be a part of Superfans. Just show up to one game, you may not know anything about football or any sport there but by the end of it, you could learn something new.
